Blake Amlicke Sets State Record in 100 Backstroke

Blake Amlicke ‘25 made waves at the Tennessee State Swim Championships on February 7, setting a new state record in the 100 Backstroke with an impressive time of 46.45 seconds. The victory marks a significant milestone in his swimming career and is a testament to his dedication and rigorous training.

Amlicke's triumph is especially meaningful, as his friend and training partner, Spencer Nicholas, held the state record last year. Despite the pressure, Blake managed to stay focused and deliver a controlled, powerful performance in the race. "It felt kind of like a relief and a good feeling to know the work I put in paid off," said Amlicke. "The 100 Backstroke is my signature event, and I'm proud to have broken the state record."

Although Blake had the fastest time in the 100 Backstroke, he also earned a second-place finish in the 50 Freestyle and competed strongly in the 200 Backstroke, showcasing his versatility as a swimmer. With his high school season now concluded, Blake is turning his attention to the upcoming Southern Premiere Swim Meet, where he aims to continue improving and achieve faster times.

A member of the Nashville Aquatic Club, Amlicke has been training under coaches John Morse and Doug Wharam since he was 12 years old. Blake will continue his swimming journey next year alongside his former teammate and training partner Spencer Nicholas at the University of Virginia (UVA), where he is excited to further his development. "I’m thrilled to join UVA next year, especially with such a strong legacy in the program," said Amlicke. "It was also great to receive a congratulatory message from them after my state win."

Looking ahead, Amlicke has set his sights on national competitions, with plans to qualify for the summer's national meets and represent the United States at the World Championships. His ultimate goal remains clear: to make the U.S. Olympic Team and become a key member of both the Olympic and UVA swim teams.

Blake's love for swimming began at a young age. He started at Whitworth Aquatics Club at just three years old before joining the Nashville Aquatic Club at four. His father, David Amlicke, also swam in college, competing in the same events, and has been a source of inspiration throughout Blake’s career.

“I’m thankful for the support I’ve received from my family, coaches, and the faculty and staff at JPII,” said Blake. “They’ve shown a genuine interest in my sport and helped me stay motivated throughout my journey.”

Blake Amlicke’s remarkable achievement is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career in swimming. As he continues to chase his dreams, his determination and passion for the sport remain evident, making him one to watch in the years to come.
